Objective: to host a gig in Birmingham with local indie and rock acts with the aim of gaining exposure in the music/events scene and to help provide a platform for artists to showcase their work and talents.

Our Plan:

The first step was to create a brand that captured our vision clearly and also linked to the music we would like to showcase. Since all the members of the group are fans of independent/indie music, we decided to brand ourselves with a DIY and raw aesthetic, which ultimately lead us to 'Phoney Events'. We quickly realised that 'Phoney Events' could also be interpreted as a quirky and 'tongue-in-cheek' play on Sony Events, which further enhanced the character and charisma of the brand. To build on top of this, Rosie and Will created drafts of different logo designs (which can be viewed in the 'Promotion' section of the portfolio).

Team Roles:

The next step was to hand out roles and distribute tasks to each member of the Phoney Events team. The individual roles were based on the skills and attributes of each members, skills ranging from the likes of having the ability to design and create promotional content, the ability to communicate with artists and acts or having strong industry connections:

Rosie - Team Leader and Artist Liaison: Rosie was assigned as team manager and artist liaison as she had the strongest ties to Birmingham's rock and indie scene, with connections varying from artists to venues. Ultimately, Rosie helped secure 3 of our 4 acts and the venue itself using her relations and contacts, making her a strong leader also. The tasks undertaken by Rosie included helping form Phoney's initial brand (creating logos and posters) as well as sorting out arrangements with the booked acts and venue (such as sorting out PA and sound, sound check slots and contracts).

Will - Graphic Designer and Social Media Manager: Will was an experienced graphic designer and helped create draft logos alongside Rosie. He was also responsible for creating the graphic branding of content posted on social media, which were defined by block colour borders consisting of green, yellows and pinks. These designs effectively captured the indie brand of Phoney, pairing standout colour choices and unique font to show off the booked artists.

Izak - Artist Liaison and Social Media Content Creator: Another addition to the social media team was Izak, who had worked with artists in the past on creating promotional content such as ads and music videos. Izak was in charge of creating content for Phoney's social media pages, specifically focusing on creating brief and attention grabbing video clips for the separate acts performing. These helped towards promotion as band members would share their praise for these posts and share them with their fanbase. In addition to this, Izak helped secure our headline act, whom he had strong links with in the past and actively worked with them on running a giveaway competition.

Kate - Sales and Ticketing Manager: Kate was assigned sales and tickets manager as she had a broad knowledge of the sales sector. She assessed different ticketing websites, deciding to go with Eventbrite as the best option for online distribution, and also helped set up a physical sales ticket strategy alongside Becky.

Becky - Graphic Designer and Promotion: Becky worked closely with Kate on ticketing, as she provided the final designs used for the physical tickets. She then developed a physical ticket strategy, which would involve handing out bulks of tickets for group members to sell on to bands, friends and family or to regulars at local venues, which allowed us to spread word of the event and create a 'buzz' around the Phoney Events name.

Sam - Social Media Content Creator and Promotion: Sam was appointed as social media content creator, focusing on the day-to-day posting of the social media accounts. This included posting about ticket availability, posting to the account's stories and communicating/dealing with any customers or band enquiries. Sam also helped set up physical promotion strategies, including the distribution of flyers in University halls and public areas.

Sasha - Social Media and Promotion (PR): Sasha assisted Sam with social media content, deciding what type of posts needed to be put out when to appeal to our audience. She also helped attract customers through distributing flyers and advertising on her own social media to her large following. On top of this, Sasha formed a future plans document based on the outcome of the event, considering factors that could help improve Phoney Events and where we could branch off to next (you can see this in detail in the 'Future Plans' section).
